Wildside's Searchable Imagebase contains a representative selection of images from Wildside's 27,000+ collection of natural history and earth science images from around the world. Included are images from North America (Canada, United States, Mexico); Central America (Nicaragua); South America (Argentina, Brazil, Chile); Asia (Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Israel, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Turkey, Vietnam); Africa (Namibia, South Africa, Tunisia) and Australia. Images in the database are available as high resolution jpg or tif files. To search for subjects go to the Searchable Imagebase, enter a keyword in the Search box at the top right of the screen and press enter (there is no need to login). Right clixk on thumbnails to open a larger image in a new tab or window. The following hints may make your search easier:
Use singular keywords, e.g., for "mammals" use "mammal". When choosing a key word animals and plants can be searched for using their common (English) or scientific (genus or species) name. Searches are also possible on their habitats (e.g., wetland, rainforest) and conservation status (e.g., endangered, vulnerable). Young animals can be found with search terms such as juvenile, young, baby. Earth science images can be found using a descriptive name (e.g., metamorphic, landslide, granite) or process (e.g., metamorphism, mass wasting). Images of human interactions with nature can be found with terms such as environmental, forestry, plantation, agriculture etc. For very broad searches use general terms such as geology, geomorphology (or abbreviations such as "geo" that would find geology, geomorphology, geochemistry and geophysics related images), environment, flower, animal, mammal, wildlife, flora, fauna bird, national park etc. Keywords are not case sensitive.
The database can also be searched by geographic
location - city (e.g., Vancouver); state or province (e.g., British Columbia);
country (e.g., Malaysia); and region (e.g., Asia); or more detailed
place names (e.g., Taman Negara National Park, Duke Island).
Alternatively, if you have
Google Earth
, you can look for Wildside images around
the Planet and then zoom in on selected regions, countries or locations
to see where images were taken. Click on the image placemark (camera icon)
to open a link to the images or searchable database.
Use the name of a country placemark to find all available
images from that country.
A successful search will bring up image thumbnails together with a caption and a complete list of associated keywords to assist in refining your search. Right click on a thumbnail to get a larger image and a more complete description of the subject in a new tab or window.
